Due to Covid-19, tournaments 2020 and 2021 were cancelled and 2022 was put 'on hold'. If you would like to be added to our mailing list as an ‘interested player’ or maybe organise a tournament for this year and possibly beyond, please get in touch with us.
Fingers and everything else were crossed for a dry morning at Rye Golf Club where this year’s Annual Herdman Association Golf Tournament was being played on Friday
27 September and, despite gale force winds, that’s how it turned out for the nine pairs teeing off just after 9 o’clock with everyone returning to The Herdman Pavilion windswept but smiling and a look of relief that they’d actually managed to play 9 holes and remain standing upright. Following a comprehensive buffet lunch provided by a small group of Herdman members, Wally Close made presentations to the following: to overall winner, David Todd (the winner of the inaugural tournament back in 2014) the Herdman Claret Jug; to Andy Hearnshaw, the Wally Close trophy for ‘Nearest the Pin’, and the three ladies who played: Sally Bowles, Jo Goodwin and Jane Willing were presented with gifts of golf balls. Jeff Moore also received a gift for managing to play off the same tee as the ladies.... Our sincere thanks to Wally for arranging this event with Rye Golf Club for the fifth year running. Wally decided to pass the baton to Rob Machin, a Rye Member, to organise future tournaments with the club and we thank Rob for agreeing to take this on. Sadly, Wally passed away in December 2022 and he will be missed for so many reasons, especially his enthusiasm for golf, his support for the Herdman and, most definitely, his wicked sense of humour. This really is a fun day out for all the players so, whether one plays a couple of times a week or once a year (as some of our players do!) there’s something for everyone to enjoy: good company, a links course, unpredictable weather but delicious food and wine to come back to. |
